The voices of the four instruments, skilfully interwoven, brought back to life a piece that was intense, urgent and, at times, tender and songlike.

The Quartetto Thumós was formed in the summer of 2022, when four young musicians who had graduated from the “G. Verdi” Conservatory in Milan came together.

Since October 2022 the Quartet has been enrolled on the Stauffer Artist Diploma course in String Quartet at the Accademia Stauffer in Cremona, under the guidance of the Quartetto di Cremona. From October 2023 the musicians have continued their studies at the Kunstuniversität Graz, on the Master’s course in Chamber Music for strings and piano with Alexander Pavlovsky, first violin of the Jerusalem Quartet.

The ensemble has taken part in chamber music masterclasses with internationally renowned teachers, among them the Jerusalem Quartet, Günter Pichler and Valentin Erben (Alban Berg Quartett), Lawrence Dutton and David Finckel (Emerson Quartet), Miguel Da Silva (Quatuor Ysaÿe) and Marc Danel (Quatuor Danel).

The Quartet has played for some of the most important concert societies in Italy and abroad, including the Società del Quartetto di Milano, I Suoni delle Dolomiti, the Filarmonica di Trento and Tala Producciones in Madrid. It has also been a guest on the programme “Voci in Barcaccia” on RAI Radio3.

The ensemble has won a number of awards, among them First Prize in the Chamber Music category at the ninth Milan Conservatory Prize, and First Prize together with the “Chamber Music for Europe” Special Prize at the 28th “G. Rospigliosi” Competition — which brought with it a prize concert in Brussels — as well as the Special Prize at the “Filippo Nicosia Award”, a violin offered by the Liuteria Giorgio Grisales. In 2025 the Quartetto Thumós was named Best Ensemble 2024 by Le Dimore del Quartetto, an award conferred by the Gioventù Musicale d’Italia.

Through Le Dimore del Quartetto the group took part in a project of intercultural collaboration with local Cypriot musicians at the Medieval Festival of Ayia Napa in Cyprus. Thanks to the Accademia Stauffer, the Quartet has held two artistic residencies, at the Royal College of Music in London and the Escuela “Reina Sofía” in Madrid, each closing with a concert — at the Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall and the Auditorio Sony respectively.

Of particular note, in July 2025, was their appearance alongside the Quartetto di Cremona at the Auditorium Arvedi in Cremona, in a concert promoted by the Fondazione Stauffer to celebrate twenty-five years of the renowned ensemble and forty years of the Accademia Stauffer.

The vigour, the rhythmic drive, but also the care for detail — the balance between the parts and a particular leaning towards a singing tone — make the very young players of the Thumós the ideal partners for twenty-five years of distinction of the Quartetto di Cremona.
