Eckart Runge has established himself as one of the most versatile cellists of his generation, as a soloist, chamber musician, visionary, and teacher.
As a founding member, he has played a decisive role in shaping the distinctive profile of the Artemis Quartet, an internationally acclaimed chamber music ensemble, for over three decades. In 2019, he decided to take on new artistic challenges.
Major concert institutions such as Die Glocke in Bremen (2021–2024), BASF in Ludwigshafen (2022/23), and Carinthischer Sommer (2024) have awarded him artist residencies.
His first solo album was released in 2020 with the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin (RSB), and includes the world premiere recording of Nikolai Kapustin’s jazz-influenced Cello Concerto Op. 85. The album received the prestigious “German Record Critics’ Award.”
In 2025, he performed the German premiere of John Williams’ Cello Concerto in Mannheim, with the Rhineland-Palatinate State Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Marcus Bosch.
For over 25 years, his duo Runge & Ammon has been performing at international festivals, concert seasons, and clubs. In 2021, the duo released the album Revolutionary Icons (EDEL/Berlin Classics), which explores the music of Ludwig van Beethoven, placing it in dialogue with some of the most significant icons of rock, pop, and jazz, such as Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, and Miles Davis. In 2023, Baroque in Blue was released, a project that combines baroque music and jazz, which was received with great enthusiasm by critics.
A new album is scheduled for release in 2025: Opium, a work that reflects the freedom and creativity between the two World Wars, but also their shadow of catastrophe and the link with our current decade.
Eckart Runge studied with David Geringas in Lübeck and with the Alban Berg Quartet in Vienna. Further artistic inspiration also comes from Lynn Harrell, Alfred Brendel, Walter Levin, and György Kurtág. Success in international competitions in Cremona, Geneva, and Monaco launched his international career. His international career has been marked by success in international competitions in Cremona, Geneva, and Munich.
Anyone who is not moved by Eckart Runge’s sound has no heart.
