Released on 29 May on Berlin Classics, the new album J. S. Bach: Goldberg Variations features Eckart Runge, the cellist represented by Mimesis Artist Management, alongside saxophonist Asya Fateyeva — born in Crimea and today among the most established classical saxophonists of her generation — and accordionist Andreas Borregaard, a Dane and a respected teacher at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien in Hanover.
The project grew out of a musical dream the three performers had nurtured for years: none of them plays the instrument Bach originally wrote the Variations for — the two-manual harpsichord, a supreme discipline later inherited by the piano. Saxophone, cello and accordion, some of which did not even exist in Bach’s day, thus measure themselves against this monument of polyphony, casting a very well known work in an entirely new light.
The result is a journey in sound across the whole Goldberg cycle — from the opening Aria, through the thirty variations, to the return of the Aria da capo — reinventing timbres and balances without betraying Bach’s contrapuntal writing.
